“NAMI Basics Support Group” for Parents of Children and Adolescents, in its Ninth Year

NAMI Cook County North Suburban has been helping parents of children and adolescents with mental illnesses by holding a monthly support group, for more than eight years. Formerly known as the “Visions for Tomorrow Support Group”, the “NAMI Basics Support Group” meets the second Thursday of every month, except August, at the Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Avenue, in Kenilworth.

The support group is confidential and is for parents and primary caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness (diagnosed or undiagnosed) from birth to approximately 21 years of age. The “NAMI Basics Support Group” starts at 7:30PM and ends at 9:00PM promptly. There is no registration or RSVP required, and it is free – just come when you need someone who understands and will listen.

Or just come, and listen to other parents and caregivers. The meeting format is variable depending on the number of parents present. According to facilitator Jean Jorgensen, “The primary focus of the support group is to discuss how you, your family, and your child are doing in the ‘here and now’. If there are only a handful of people, we just go with whatever anyone wants to discuss.

We are there to listen and to help parents realize that they are not alone.“ Jean and her husband Jim are trained facilitators who know first hand the challenges and joys of parenting a child diagnosed at a very young age with bipolar disorder. They have a wealth of understanding and knowledge to offer. Please join us. For more information, and to learn more about NAMI Basics Support Group, call the NAMI CCNS office at 847-716-2252.
