The 3 Most Important Vitamins for Mental Health

Published by Courtney Hall

While most people take vitamins for the numerous physical health benefits that they provide, these supplements can also be the key to optimal mental health. Many common issues such as depression and anxiety are the result of deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. This makes it important to supplement your diet with these nutritional powerhouses. Don’t pass up these three important vitamins when you are looking to boost your mental health:

With any an all things dealing with your health, please consult a doctor when taking any supplements.  All advice is subject to opinion, however we do our best to present facts.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has long been touted for its exceptional health benefits over a wide array of physical ailments and preventive measures. Recent studies have shown that this vitamin also can be advantageous when looking to boost mental health. Because vitamin C supports the nervous system, it can improve memory and boost overall brain function. The vitamin has also been shown to ease the effects of depression and anxiety, encouraging a more positive outlook on life.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency and mental health has burst onto the scene as an increasing focus on sun safety has contributed to an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately, over 42 percent of Americans are vitamin D-deficient, which could be one of the reasons behind the surge in mental health concerns in the U.S. This crucial vitamin is a key nutrient for the healthy function of the nervous system. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression with symptoms of irritability, insomnia, reduced appetite, and more. While a little sun can make a big difference, if it’s wintertime or you live in a region with less sun, take in extra vitamin D through a vitamin or supplement.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The body does not produce essential fatty acids on its own, making it necessary that you get them from supplements. Look for fish oil supplements that contain EPA and DHA. These acids are crucial for the healthy development of the brain. Low levels of omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to lead to premature aging of the brain and an increased incidence of depression. The effects of fish oil supplements on the brain have been compared to that of taking an anti-depression medication.

Not all vitamins are created equal. Be sure to shop around to make sure that the vitamins that you are putting in your body are best for you. With the right mix of vitamins and supplements, you can improve both your physical health and your overall mental outlook.

Not only do you want to take good vitamins for your mental health, but you should also make sure your diet is healthy for optimal mental wellness. Check out this article with more information about how your diet can help your mental health!
